Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM):
IASTM, an alternative intervention, is a cutting-edge form of myofascial mobilization, utilizing instruments to release scar tissue, adhesions and other restrictions. When soft tissue injuries occur, scar tissue and adhesions form as a result of fibers lying down in an abnormal pattern. This phenomenon can limit joint range of motion, promote incorrect movement patterns and cause pain. The primary goal of IASTM is to provide a controlled initiation of the inflammatory/healing process allowing fibers to lie down in a more correct and parallel pattern. This will promote increased joint range of motion, efficient movement patterns and decreased pain.
IASTM can also benefit individuals in the sports and fitness industries. The instruments can be used before, during, or after activity by allowing increased blood flow to the muscles and reducing discomfort from muscle spasms and soreness.
